In Arabidopsis, SIR is encoded by a single, essential gene and is described as a bottleneck in the sulfate assimilation pathway ( SIR expression is rapidly upregulated in Arabidopsis and tomato in response to higher sulfite content, and accordingly SIR activity increases (Yarmolinsky et al., 2013)
